Why are State Leagues Important?
State legislators, county legislators, and town and city managers make many critical environmental decisions. Current federal policy is to provide state and local governments with even more authority on environmental policy than already exists.
Unfortunately, without a strong state League of Conservation Voters, state and local legislators are subject to far less public scrutiny than federal legislators and are less likely to be held accountable by the voting public. Fewer than three in every ten eligible voters actually vote in state and local elections.
State conservation leagues are a critical link in the effort to increase public participation and hold state and local legislators accountable. These leagues work to educate voters about the records of state and local elected officials and to turn out “environmentally-minded” voters at election time.
