Summary:
The Outreach Director coordinates and implements the Conservation Alabama/Conservation Alabama Foundation’s fundraising and outreach duties. S/he leads all aspects of the organization’s individual giving program and its membership communications. Working closely with the Executive Director and other members of the development team, s/he leads the formation and implementation of the organization’s fundraising and donor communications annual plan.
This individual is in charge of managing fundraising databases, growing the individual giving and major donor program, providing outreach to Conservation Alabama/Conservation Alabama Foundation’s membership and public through printed publications, e-newsletters, and website development, researching grant opportunities, and coordination of board of directors’ and committees’ meetings and activities.
Organizational Background:
Founded in 1999, Conservation Alabama, formerly the Alabama League of Environmental Action Voters, is the only full-time environmental lobbying organization in the state. We focus on administrative advocacy, legislative lobbying, and bi-partisan electoral politics. The Conservation Alabama Foundation, founded in 2007, is the 501c3 educational affiliate of Conservation Alabama. The Foundation works to build the ability of Alabama citizens and organizations to promote conservation through government and civic action.
Supervisor:
This position reports to the Executive Director.
Hours:
Full-time, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with occasional evening and weekend work for board meetings and conferences, but flexible arrangements can be made to accommodate an individual’s needs.
Location:
Birmingham or Montgomery, Alabama
Principle Responsibilities:
- Work with Executive Director and board, develop annual fundraising plan
- Coordinate the annual revenue budgeting process and mid-year revenue budget revisions
- Report on overall fundraising progress on an ongoing basis
- Manage all aspects of the individual donor program, including mail appeals, new member acquisition, and major donor cultivation
- Research and edit foundation, agency and corporate proposals and reports
- Assist in other ways with foundation, agency and corporate programs as needs and opportunities dictate
- Working closely with the Executive Director and others, identify, cultivate and approach prospective major individual, corporate, foundation and agency donors
· Assist Executive Director and Board with planning and coordination for Board meetings and Board committee meetings.
- Lead development of publications, e-newsletters, an annual report, and other publications distributed to Conservation Alabama/Conservation Alabama Foundation donors and other supporters
- Maintain press contact lists and prepare occasional press releases regarding major Conservation Alabama/Conservation Alabama Foundation activities and accomplishments
- Work with staff to refine Conservation Alabama/Conservation Alabama Foundation messages for media, including proposals, reports, web site, newsletters, brochures, displays, etc.
Qualifications:
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Experience with electronic and printed publishing desired.
- Experience in nonprofit conservation work or related progressive organizations (at least three years preferred)
- Experience in nonprofit fundraising and/or political fundraising from individual and major donors (at least three years preferred)
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- A basic understanding of Alabama’s conservation community and political community preferred.
