OHIO LEGISLATOR’S CONSERVATION REPORT CARD INDICATES FALLING GRADES

COLUMBUS, OHIO –The Ohio League of Conservation Voters (OLCV) released its annual legislative scorecard for Ohio legislators today.  The average score in the House of Representatives fell to 67 percent for the 127th two-year legislative session, down from a B average in 2004.  Fifty-eight members of the House scored 60 percent or lower on key environmental votes.  Scores in the Senate also fell slightly from a B in 2004 to a 73 percent in 2006.

“Overall the General Assembly’s environmental record was a point of frustration during the last two-year session, a lot of the negative scores are a result of too many party line votes,” said Bill DeMora, Executive Director of OLCV.  “Many members who generally agree with our positions will still vote the other way for fear of reprisal. The people of Ohio deserve more legislators who are willing to stand up for what they believe.”

“However, the outlook for positive activity at the Statehouse in 2007 is encouraging, it appears that the new General Assembly is committed to protecting our Great Lakes by stepping up and entering into the Great Lakes compact and establishing an energy policy for Ohio that focuses on efficiency and renewable and sustainable energy technologies,” said Demora.  “We look forward to working with the new General Assembly as well as Governor Strickland to help craft these policies over the next two years.”

The scores were calculated based on key environmental legislation voted on by the members of the Ohio General Assembly from January 2004 to December 2006. OLCV worked closely with other environmental and conservation groups across the state to achieve consensus on the important issues of the scorecard and legislation that will affect the lives of Ohio’s citizens.

OLCV’s mission is to hold elected officials accountable for their record on the environment and to work on electing pro-environment majorities in both chambers of the legislature.
